Assassin fly (Philonicus albiceps)

This is an Assassin or Robber fly or maybe both. (comments welcome) Also found on the coast of the Algarve while on holiday. They seem harmless to us but but are excellent at catching other insect prey in flight. Their eyes are big for that reason.
