Carpenter bee (Xylocopa sp) feeding on nectar

These giant bees can be mistaken for large flying beetles until you see them close up. When you do see them they come across as quite harmless and sort of majestic as they just get on with sucking nectar from various flower heads. As they are so heavy they pull the flower down with their weight and can be difficult to capture a still picture as they do not wait around for you.
